Arbie Gillaspie

Married to Diann

Two sons, one daughter

Enlisted 1958-1962.  I worked at various jobs such as mill work, Job Corps, Post Office, and Boeing until I was 29. I then decided to go to college.  I earned a Masters degree in Health and PE and taught school, coached wrestling and baseball. I started a knife block and cutting board business and continued that until I had two bouts with cancer.  Retraining got me into the insurance business.  I officially retired in 2006.  I enjoy fishing in the boat, golfing and woodworking.  I am actively involved with the Sawdust Theater in Coquille, having just finished the role of Bertrum, the barkeeper.

Best memory:  I cannot think of a best thing that happened to me in boot camp.

Worse memory:  I was standing on the edge of the “piss pit” waiting for Sgt. Beltz to say go.  He waited until my rope was in the center going the other direction.  I hesitated just a split second and jumped, caught the rope and hit the other side running.  I heard Beltz yell, “Gillaspie, get over here!”  I went back and stood at attention. In a quiet voice (I had not been treated decent in boot camp up to that time) Beltz said, “Get on the rope.”  I got on the rope and then he said, “Give me your left leg.” And then in even a quieter voice he said,“Let go!”  There was nothing but silt and muck down there.
